Biography

Christian was born on 22 June 1809 in Babow within the Kottbus district of Brandenburg.

He married Elise RUSCHKEN and together with their children, the family emigrated to South Australia in 1854. The children were: Elizabeth (c 1835), Christian (1840), Matthis (variously recorded as Matthias/Mathias/Matthes) (1841), Anna (c1843), Friedrich c 1845, Marie (c 1847), Wilhelm (c 1849), Christiane (c 1851).

"The Malvina Vidal left Hamburg on 10 June 1854, sailed into the North Sea five days later and arrived in Melbourne on 5 October 1854. According to the official passenger list, 254 Germans and Wends disembarked at Melbourne, the remaining passengers and cargo bound for New South Wales. On 12 October 1854, most of the Wends boarded the coastal steamer Havilah at Coles’ Wharf and left Melbourne for Adelaide, where they arrived four days later. On 18 October, the Malvina Vidal sailed on to Sydney, arriving there on 27 October 1854." (Robert Wuchatsch reference 3)

The family resided initially at Hope Valley north of Adelaide before settling on a farming property at Peters Hill near Riverton, South Australia.

Peters Hill, is located on an attractive wooded range about 5 kilometres east of Riverton. A number of families of Prussian, particularly Wendish origin, took up land. Many resettled from the staging villages of Hope Valley and Hoffnungsthal and had been fellow travellers on their voyage to South Australia. They were, therefore, well acquainted and this resulted in a significant number of marriages between the families. Initially, many families lived in dugouts along the hillside until they were able to erect more substantial buildings.

The "Flinders Ranges Research" project provides the following snap shot of early Peters Hill:

"Peters Hill was listed in 1846 but the origin of its name still creates some problems. According to some people it was named after Peter Inkster (1829-1917), an early settler. Others would say that it was named Petatz Hill, after Martin Petatz, a nearby property owner. Whatever the case may be, a school and church was erected in 1856. Among some of its trustees were Messrs Borack, Duldig, Noack, Petatz and Zollner (Zerna)."

"The land for the church and cemetery was donated by Christian Marschall in 1856. Marschall, his wife and ten children lived nearby. His hut, which has been restored is now used as an overnight shelter for walkers on the Heysen Trail. Several of their children are buried at the Peters Hill cemetery. Among them Maria Lydia, who died on 19 August 1863, Christian, 10 December 1865, Friedrich Albert, 26 February 1868, Friedrich Wilhelm, 17 September 1870 and Anna Lydia who died on 7 September 1876."

"With the rapid expansion of the settlement it was decided to build a new church and school in 1864. This time they built them some two kilometres away on the plain. Although the school was destroyed by fire, the church, St Peter Lutheran Church, is still in use today, as is its cemetery behind the building." (6)

The Old Cemetery is accessable depending on the weather conditions. It is advisable to check with the adjoining land owners, the Huppatz family before visiting the site.

Christian passed away at Peters Hill, South Australia on 9 March 1896.

Place of burial: Old Lutheran Cemetery, Peters Hill, South Australia.
